Name your favorite scent.

We're getting close to the season of olfactory scentations - sugar cookies baking, roasting poultry, cake, ham, mulled cidar, etc.

What's your favorite scent?

My absolute favorite scent would probably be a bai lan (michelia alba) flower, though a lei of frangipani gives that a good run for the money. I also love Evelyn and Crabtree's Nantucket Briar - a very simple sweet scent that's perfect all year around.

I like the scent of yuzu, a Japanese citrus. It is subtle yet refreshing.

A grilling spiny lobster also smells nice.

Yuzu are very nice smelling. I wish they tasted better though.

I think it is there mostly for its aroma.

I did have a good yuzu sorbet though.

Peter P,

What do you think of foshou (Buddha's hands) citron?

Fresh from tree key lime is also very nice.

I love more citrus fruits, except lemon, which I only like.

I love the way Buddha's Hand looks...

SFWoman, do you grow kumquats? They're relatively hardy and start yielding (heavily) while very young. They might be good choices for your country house. Their sweet rinds can be eaten raw or they can be made into preserves.

I'm kind of surprised the yield is so low. When I was in college, I used to supplement my diet with kumquats from Pitzer College's citrus grove. They had a 6' kumquat tree that yields at least a bushel of fruit every year.

I love the smell of Buddha's Hands too. I always buy them for decoration when I'm in Shanghai. I've never tried cooking with them though.

Randy,

I just found this intriguing bread recipe on NYTimes:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/08/dining/081mrex.html?em&ex=1163394000&en=f0669decffd7b1c0&ei=5087%0A

Mark Bittman claims it's the best homemade bread recipe ever.

re: CR - I guess I was naive, but I was really surprised that CR really was FR/MP. I can't believe the same troll came back for more abuse!
